SAIC Partnership Realizes Major Publication with University of Chicago Press

Chicago, IL—The city of Chicago puts a new lens on its history of modern innovation this December as the University of Chicago Press publishes Chicago Makes Modern: How Creative Minds Changed Society, edited by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Professor Mary Jane Jacob, Executive Director of Exhibitions and Exhibition Studies, together with Jacquelyn Baas.

SAIC President Walter E. Massey and Shirley Massey Honored by Morehouse College

Chicago, IL—Dr. Walter E. Massey, President of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), will be honored with his wife Shirley on Thursday, October 25 when Morehouse College celebrates the naming of the Walter E. Massey Leadership Center and the Shirley A. Massey Executive Conference Center at a ceremony in Atlanta. Dr. Massey is President Emeritus of Morehouse College—his alma mater, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics at the age of 20 in 1958—in addition to serving as SAIC President.

SAIC Faculty Members Receive $10,000 TED Prize for Crowdsourcing Transit App Project “Designing Chicago”

Chicago, IL—George Aye and Sara Cantor Aye, faculty members in SAIC’s Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects (AIADO), have received a $10,000 prize from TED. Their City 2.0 grant will support Designing Chicago: New Tools for Public Transit, a project from the Aye’s Greater Good Studio that leverages public participation and design to improve citywide navigation.

Isabel & Ruben Toledo Come to SAIC as FRC Celebrates 25 Years

Chicago, IL—The Fashion Resource Center (FRC) at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) presents a lecture by Cuban-born, New York-based fashion designer Isabel Toledo and fashion illustrator and artist Ruben Toledo on October 27, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. in the Art Institute of Chicago’s Fullerton Hall (111 S. Michigan Ave.) Isabel will present thoughts on her distinct flair for pattern cutting and garment construction. Ruben will discuss his sense of design in both commercial and non-commercial arenas.

Conversations at the Edge (CATE) Opens New Season September 13

SAIC Receives Innovation Generation Grant from Motorola Solutions Foundation

Chicago, IL—The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), home to the GFRY Studio in the Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects, announced August 22 it has received $75,000 as part of the Innovation Generation grant program from the Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions, Inc. Through the grant, SAIC will offer its seventh GFRY Studio to 14 eligible undergraduate and graduate students.

Fall 2012 Exhibitions at the SAIC Sullivan Galleries

Chicago, IL— Exhibitions at SAIC are a significant resource for the school community and the city at large. The Sullivan Galleries—along with the Student Union Galleries and other temporary locations on and off campus—are engaged as sites of interaction, experimentation, and dialogue among students, faculty, and alumni, as well as places for collaboration with Chicago’s artists and other cultural institutions. Information on over a dozen fall/winter presentations is presented below.
