SAIC Hosts IN>TIME 2016

CHICAGO—The city of Chicago and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), one of the nation’s leading art and design schools, host the IN>TIME performance art festival, featuring both international and local artists exhibiting in 15 diverse venues across the city. Organized by SAIC faculty member and Performance department Graduate Coordinator Mark Jeffery, the festival will showcase a diverse sampling of performance work from January 8–March 4.

SAIC Receives $1 Million from Michael and Cari Sacks

CHICAGO—The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), one of the nation’s leading art and design schools, announced a $1 million gift from Michael and Cari Sacks to establish the Sacks Family Scholarships. The new fund will provide need-based scholarships for SAIC graduate and undergraduate students who are Chicago Public High Schools graduates. The gift comes while SAIC is in the midst of a year-long celebration to honor its 150th Anniversary.

SAIC Announces Artist Residency Program, Workshops in Nichols Tower

CHICAGO—The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) opened its first permanent classroom outside of its downtown campus where it will offer arts education to the residents of North Lawndale on Chicago’s west side. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined SAIC to cut the ribbon at Nichols Tower, where SAIC announced it will launch an artist residency and three semester-long workshops. The original Sears, Roebuck and Co. tower was renovated as part of a revitalization of the neighborhood’s Homan Square area.

SAIC Artists Named United States Artists (USA) Distinguished Fellows

Chicago—SAIC faculty member Anne Wilson was named a United States Artists (USA) Distinguished Fellow. Each year, USA celebrates the breadth of American artistic practices by providing $50,000 unrestricted awards directly to artists. Former faculty member and SAIC alum Deborah Stratman (BFA 1990), a Chicago-based artist and filmmaker, was also named a fellow.

Sarah Vowell Visits SAIC as Distinguished Alumni Lecturer

CHICAGO—School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) alum and New York Times-bestselling author Sarah Vowell (MA 1999) spoke on campus on October 29 as part of SAIC’s Visiting Artists Program. The lecture was presented in partnership with the Chicago Humanities Festival. Vowell’s irreverent and hilarious explorations into American history and politics have won her a large and devoted readership—and Vowell wasn’t shy on Thursday about delivering quips about politics, art school and researching the French to the audience of nearly 900 people.
