The tech-focused website, Wired, recently ran a story on the Array of Things, a collaboration between the Urban Center for Computation and Data at the University of Chicago, Argonne National Laboratory, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In the interviewDouglas Pancoast, Director of SAIC's Earl and Brenda Shapiro Center for Research and Collaboration and Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects, spoke of the work that he and his students were doing to make the proposed data collection nodes become a part of Chicago's architecture. Forty sensors will go up near the campuses of SAIC, University of Chicago, and Argonne National Laboratory to collect data such as air quality, pedestrian traffic, and temperature. Pancoast and his colleagues hope to install 1,000 nodes downtown by next year to collect even more data available in the hopes of making Chicago a smarter city.
