Windy City Times: SAIC Student “Pushes Boundaries of Art”

On February 5 Windy City Times profiled SAIC student Katie Vota (MFA 2015), currently exhibited in the two-person juried show Off the Wall at Intelligentsia, 54 East Randolph Street. Vota "is one of a movement of contemporary artists who are thinking about genre differently," says writer Nico Lang. Working with textiles, she aims to find a place for craft makers in the larger art world, where they are often marginalized or left out. "Having outside limitations is really helpful to me as a way generating more interesting ideas," Vota explains. "I want to poke at these arbitrary conceptions that we have in order break down these hierarchies that exist within art."  Vota's work is also exhibited at SAIC's Sharp Building, 37 South Wabash Avenue, eighth floor.
