VICE Profiles Multi-talented SAIC Student
B. David Zarley of VICE profiles SAIC student Meaghan Garvey (BFA 2012) in “Talking to the Holy Ghost In Her Bugatti” posted on November 6. Garvey exhibits a passion for hip-hop as DJ (under the pseudonym “Moneyworth”) and as a visual artist, lacing spiritual iconography and mysticism into images of her favorite rappers. Describing the artist’s aesthetic, Zarley states, “her baroque, darkly luxurious, black rococo style shares a similar timbre with photographers Pierre et Giles, with the darkness lacquered in lines rather than film.” He also highlights Garvey’s shop on Etsy where she sells a slew of hip-hop themed creations. “Like Warhol and Hirst,” he writes, “Garvey not only appreciates the commercial realm of art, she revels in it.”
