Time Raids the FRC Closet

On November 5 Time magazine offered a glimpse into Material Translations: Japanese Fashion from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago—anexhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago showcasing garments from SAIC’s Fashion Resource Center (FRC).  The article argues that although the impact of Japanese fashion “can be traced to every corner of the industry today,” the influence of Japanese designers “really took root in the 1980’s, when couturiers such as Rei Kawakubo and Issey Miyake revolutionized clothing with avant-garde creations that blurred the line between fashion and art.” Time features 11 “key pieces” from this “now-iconic period” by designers Rei Kawakubo for Comme de Garçons, Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, Junya Watanabe, and more. Material Translations runs through April 7.
