Three SAIC Faculty Members Named “Artists to Watch” at the Whitney Biennial
On February 17, Chicago magazine highlighted three SAIC faculty members participating in the upcoming 2014 Whitney Biennial, co-curated by SAIC faculty member Michelle Grabner (Painting and Drawing). Contributors Elly Fishman and Jason Foumberg spotlight faculty member and alumnus Elijah Burger (Contemporary Practices, MFA 2004), “whose graphic ruminations provide a lens into a dizzying, vibrant universe where curiosity and experimentation reigns.” Carol Jackson (Sculpture), “one of Chicago’s most underappreciated sculptors,” stands out for her elaborate leather sculptures. Phillip Hanson (Painting and Drawing, 1968) is also one to watch. “A member of that 1960s group of iconoclasts known as the Hairy Who, Hanson finally gets his due after 50 years of exhibitions. His fantastical oil paintings are as wild as they are intricate; look closely, and you’ll see that no corner is ever left untouched.” Nearly 20 of the 103 artists announced as participants in this year’s Whitney Biennial have ties to SAIC.
