The LeRoy Neiman Center: SAIC’s Home Base

On February 12 design blogs +MOOD and Dexigner highlighted the LeRoy Neiman Center—SAIC’s “central focus point” on campus. Writer Jimmy M. states the new Student Center “addresses a challenge faced by many urban colleges lacking a main campus: the need for a ‘home base.’” Designed by Valerio Dewalt Train Associates (VDTA), the Center “combines offices and spaces for meeting, studying, lounging, and dining while offering a sense of identity to the student body,” he adds. Both articles highlight the inclusion of the monumental Summertime in the Indiana Dunes, a large mural by main donor and artist LeRoy Neiman. “VDTA created a special viewing area for the painting in the lobby of the building. The painting had to be bent to fit; it turns a 90-degree corner. The result is a striking visual display at the building’s entrance.” An accompanying collection of vivid images detail the dynamic environment shared by the SAIC community.
