SAIC Shines in Newcity’s “Art 50”

Newcity highlights at least eighteen members of the SAIC community in its September 19 feature, “Art 50: Chicago’s Visual Vanguard,” five of whom list among the top ten. Authored by contributors including Jason Foumberg (MFA 2006), Annette Elliott (MFA 2012), Sofia Leiby (BFA 2011), Pedro Velez (MFA 1999, Painting and Drawing), and Bert Stabler (BFA 1997, MA 2003), the list spotlights the “smart, hardworking people who lead our museums, sell our art, broadcast our ideas, and make the city a better place to be an artist.” Featured SAIC community members include Candida Alvarez (Painting and Drawing), Dan Berger (Board of Governors), John Corbett (Painting and Drawing), James Elkins (Art History, Theory, and Criticism), Michelle Grabner (Painting and Drawing), Mary Jane Jacob (Executive Director of Exhibitions), Jenny Kendler (MFA 2006), Barbara Koenen (Post Bac 1986, MFA 1989), Duncan MacKenzie (MFA 2002), Walter Massey (President), Monique Meloche (1991–93), Terry Myers (Painting and Drawing), Lauren Pacheco (MA 2015), Shannon Stratton (Art History, Theory, and Criticism, MFA 2007, MAAH 2008), Hamza Walker (Painting and Drawing), Nick Wylie (Photo), James Yood (New Arts Journalism), and Mary Lou Zelazny (Painting and Drawing). SAIC's impressive showing this year follows Newcity's 2012 top-50 list of "artists' artists," in which 30 of 50 featured artists hailed from SAIC.
