SAIC Pushes Fashion Forward in Chicago

In the May-August 2013 edition of Chicago Gallery News, writer Mary De Foe eschews comparisons of Chicago’s fashion scene with that of New York and L.A., highlighting the “inextricably linked” design and art communities that set this city apart. De Foe illuminates SAIC’s influential presence in Chicago, highlighting the school’s 79 year-old annual fashion show, along with influential members of the SAIC community Nick Cave (Fashion), Creatures of the Wind Designers Shane Gabier (Fashion, 1995-1998) and Christopher Peters (BFA 2010), and SAIC fashion committee member Ikram Goldman. “Chicago youth are recognizing the power of fashion as a language, as an expression, as a way to be an individual and they are owning it!” adds SAIC faculty member Cheryl Pope (Fashion, Continuing Studies). “They are charging forward with their own brands using online printing and production companies.”
