SAIC Goes to Miami

SAICers left a wide impression on the Magic City at this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach. Some highlights in the news? The gallery of alumna Valerie Carberry (BFA 1993) made the “quirky must-see list” put together by photography curator Tim Wride. Miami Pop ranked Roberts and Tilton Gallery of Los Angeles—co-directed by SAIC alumna Julie Roberts (BFA 1990)—number one on its list of must-see booths and artists; writer Erin Newberg calls Roberts’s enterprise “my personal favorite.” Newberg also advised viewers to check out work by SAIC alumnus Michael Dopp (BFA 2005)—“Insider info tells us you should keep your eye on M. Dopp and snatch the works up while they are affordable”—and alums Angel Otero (MFA 2009, BFA 2007) and Jacob Hashimoto (BFA 1996) earned mentions as well. The work of alumnus Jon Rafman (MFA 2008) also proved popular, earning write-ups in the Huffington Post and Maclean’s. And ArtInfo contributor Julia Halperin’s report on the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) fair noted the coup of Chicago’s CourtneyBlades Gallery—run by recent SAIC grads Mickey Pomfrey (BFA 2012) and Blake Harris (BFA 2007)— and their SAIC alumni show. “NADA hosted a group of invitation-only micro-booths devoted to young gallerists…. Some are quite young: CourtneyBlades Gallery, which presented a strong booth of work from recent graduates of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, is run by a pair of 23- and 24-year-old curators.”
