SAIC Designers “Shape Chicago”

New City launched its newly expanded coverage of design with the inaugural feature Design 50: Who Shapes Chicago, featuring six members of the SAIC community. The list—found in the publication’s March 21 & 28 edition—emphasizes “those who influence the course of design in Chicago, and from Chicago, around the world.” Ikram Goldman, owner of “the Chicago boutique for couture” and member of SAIC’s Fashion Committee, earned the number ten spot. The designers behind Creatures of the Wind, faculty member Shane Gabier (Fashion, SAIC 1995-98) and fellow alumnus Christopher Peters (BFA 2010), ranked twelfth, followed by Fashion Designer and Professor Nick Cave, Art Institute of Chicago curator Zoe Ryan, and Chicago boutique owner Robin Richman (BFA 1980). The cover of the issue features a 3-D printed model of a Fluevog shoe by SAIC faculty member Tom Burtonwood. New City also ranked alum Andrew Norman Wilson’s (MFA 2011) Exhibition as Town number one on its list of “5 Shows to See Now.” The exhibition revolves around its press release, which functions as a ‘screenplay’ for the exhibition. Writer Sophia Leiby (BFA 2011) describes it as, “a masterful cultural critique that is a ‘play’ placing the artist at the center of the narrative of the exhibitions conception and completion.” Exhibition as Town runs through April 20 at Threewalls.
