SAIC Alums Take Home $50k at NYC Fashion Week
On September 6, SAIC designers rocked the runway in front of fashion heavy hitters at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week during the fourth-annual ELLE FASHION | NEXT runway competition. “This year’s contestants know how to elevate fashion into high art,” says ELLE contributor Veronique Hyland in an image-heavy two-page profile featured in the magazine’s October issue. (The second ELLE FASHION | NEXT 2013 webisode offers a behind-the-scenes look at the magazine shoot.) A jury of industry insiders—Kelly Osbourne, Pamela Love, Timo Weiland and Alan Eckstein, Creatures of the Wind, ELLE creative director Joe Zee, ELLE fashion news director Anne Slowey, and VP of Marketing from Maybelline New York Carolyn Dawkins—selected two finalists from the 23 collections shown. Savannah Cipriano (MFA 2013) walked away with ELLE FASHION | NEXT Design Award and Carlie Hougen (MFA 2013) received the Maybelline New York Design Visionary Award, both worth $25,000. ELLE readers will also select the winner of the $10,000 People’s Choice Award on ELLE.com.
Fashionista showcased the designers’ “ambitious and far-reaching looks” with a vivid slideshow posted September 10. Outlets such as theladyandtheblog, the Grio, StyleBistro, Aol Style, and FUZION magazine also covered of the competition. The spring 2014 collection from competition judges and Creatures of the Wind designers Shane Gabier (Fashion, 1995–98) and Christopher Peters (BFA 2010) received equally favorable reviews. Looks “reflected a cheerful, refreshed, fun attitude,” noted Vogue contributor Emily Holt, offering a true indication of what the “wonderfully left-of-center designers can do.” A video showcasing the designers “iconoclastic take on high evening” is available on WWD.com.
