SAIC Alumnus Charles Banks Wilson Remembered as Storyteller in Art

The Joplin Globe (Missouri) published an obituary on May 6 of SAIC alumnus Charles Banks Wilson, who passed away on May 2, 2013. Wilson attended SAIC in 1937 and is best known for his portraits of Oklahoma figures, including Olympic athlete Jim Thorpe, folk singer Woody Guthrie, and humorist Will Rogers, according to author Roger McKinney. Jim Yood, chair of New Arts Journalism and an art history professor at SAIC, was quoted in the obituary, noting that Wilson continued in the American regionalist tradition of Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry, and Grant Wood. The obituary ended with Yood’s comments, “His art is about the land he knew and the people he knew. He was a great visual poet of those peoples.”
