Noise Rocker Searches Inward
Chicago musician AZITA, formally known as Azita Youssefi (BFA 1995), details her upcoming album in an interview posted by Chicago magazine’s C Notes on November 20. A former member of noise-rock groups Scissor Girls and Bride of No-No, AZITA’s upcoming solo release, Year, is more “introspective.” The artist explains the album was originally developed for a production of the same name by Chicago playwright Brian Torrey Scott, which she preformed during Prop Theater’s 2006 Rhinoceros Festival. “Since then, the music and its arrangements have changed,” she says, “from touring and having time to flesh them out more for the album.” Previous stints in theater include a lead role in the 2010 musical Last of My Species II: The Perilous Songs of Bibi Merhdadat Chicago’s Redmoon Theater. Surprisingly, the artist’s creative focus wasn’t always music. Describing her time at SAIC, she explains, “I was there originally to learn visual art. I never stopped drawing, but toward the end I also started working within the sound department.” AZITA will perform at the Hideout on December 6 to celebrate the release of Year.
