Newcity Recommends Exhibition by Faculty Member Candida Alvarez
On September 18, Newcity recommended an exhibition of drawings by SAIC faculty member Candida Alvarez (Painting and Drawing) at the Riverside Arts Center. Chris Miller describes Alvarez’s vibrant, 9x12-inch drawings on vellum as an “invitation to a world of personal experience” conveying emotions and memories tied to significant locales. “To her, Puerto Rico, the land of her parents, feels festive and luxuriant,” he writes, “Ireland feels cool and earthy; and Chicago feels at turns stifling, challenging or exciting.” An exhibition of Alvarez’s “ambitious, large scale paintings” opens this December at the Hyde Park Art Center.
