Hyde Park Jazz Festival Flourishes Under Faculty Member’s Leadership
On July 9 Chicago Tribune Art Critic Howard Reich previewed the 7th annual Hyde Park Jazz Festival, highlighting changes initiated under its festival director, SAIC faculty member Kate Dumbleton (Arts Administration and Policy). The festival, which attracts thousands of listeners each year, “has grown so quickly that it can barely keep up with its audience,” Reich says. Operated mostly by volunteers, it gained 501(c)3 nonprofit status just this year under Dumbleton’s leadership, but still lacks the structure and resources of other events its size. "It's an interesting thing when the community just comes together and makes an audience…and then you think: 'Oh, we better build an infrastructure,'” Dumbleton says. In addition to improving this year’s event, Dumbleton and organizers have begun fundraising for year-round programming. “Surely the intense public support the festival has enjoyed from the beginning shows that there's an audience hungry for this kind of programming on the South Side,” Reich says.
