Historic Preservation Chair Chronicles His Trip to Libya

Vince Michael, SAIC’s John H. Byron Chair of Historic Preservation and Director of the Global Heritage Fund, published a compelling account of his recent trip to Libya in the Huffington Post Travel Blog. In his account titled “Postcard from Libya,” he details the country’s efforts to preserve their national heritage through site conservation and education—a reversal of the attitudes purveyed by the recently toppled Qaddafi dictatorship. “Qaddafi saw these ancient treasures as relics of past colonialism and of no value or importance to the Libyan people; the new government sees the potential of these relics in rebuilding and strengthening the economic and social system,” states Michael.
