The Grotesque Beauty of Sterling Ruby's Work

On Artsy, Sterling Ruby (BFA 2002) is recognized for his range of aesthetic qualities in various media. Working with collage, monumental sculpture, soft sculpture, paintings, ceramics, and fashion, Ruby’s works demonstrate his experimental approaches with materials, ideas, and scale. In his first comprehensive retrospective at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, Ruby presents a body of more than 100 works. Co-curated by Eva Respini and Alex Gartenfeld, the exhibition offers an opportunity to view “fractured ceramics; bleached textiles; epic metal sculptures [and] soft sculptures.” Co-curator Gartenfeld describes Ruby’s practice as one that “speaks to the importance of process, of materiality, and material transformation.”

On November 7, Sterling Ruby’s exhibition opens at the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami and will travel to the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston in February 2020.
