Chicago Sun-Times Spotlights Exhibition of Garments from SAIC’s FRC

The October 29 edition of the Chicago Sun-Timeshighlights the Art Institute’s upcoming exhibition of Japanese fashion featuring ensembles from SAIC’s Fashion Resource Center (FRC). Beginning Saturday November 3, FRC garments will be displayed in Material Transitions alongside the museum’s collection of ancient Japanese artifacts in the Tadao Ando Room. Interviewing FRC founder and director Gillion Carrara, reporter Madeline Nusser surveys the history of the collection. “We wanted to bring in designer labels that students could examine carefully without instructions, handle without gloves,” Carrara explains. Highlighting a translucent red polyester A-line shift dress by Junya Watanabe and an evening shawl made of vintage hats cut in half and grommeted together by Martin Margiela, Nusser argues “the Fashion Resource Center might be Chicago’s most fashionable spot.
