Art and Tech Alums Conquer Nationwide Building and Innovation Competition

Three alums from SAIC’s Department of Art and Technology StudiesHyuns Hong (MFA 2012), Harvey Moon (MFA 2013), and David Hull (MFA 2013)—took the $10,000 grand prize at last month’s Redbull Creation Challenge in Brooklyn. The trio, known as MB Labs, joined five groups of “makers, builders, and hackers” challenged to live-build a new musical instrument in just 72 hours during the annual Northside music festival. MB Labs triumphed with their Autoloop project, a device that allows users to control drums via a separate sensor-activated panel. In an article published by Digital Trends on June 16, Head Judge Greg Needel said, “The judges were blown away by the complete re-imagination of what a synthesizer and musical output device can be. The possibilities of where they can go with this in the future is endless.” Video recaps and live feed from the event are available on the competition’s web page
