Art 101: MFA Life at SAIC

In its August cover story, “Art 101,” Juxatapoz magazine profiles MFA students from five of the country’s top art schools. Ceramics student Mike Carney (MFA 2014) details his first year at SAIC in an interview with assistant professor Bill O’Brien (Ceramics) on the article’s first page. Carney describes his relationships with SAIC professors and faculty as a crucial component of his overall experience. “I am fostering so many amazing relationships with artists who travel the world, have museum shows, and achieve many things that I can only dream of achieving myself, which is great,” he says. “It goes without saying that these professionals have been at this way longer. The acuity of their collective eye is astounding, so what I can learn from them is endless.” Asked to offer advice to prospective MFA students, Carney says SAIC “will be hard to beat regardless of your artistic background or interests. It will guide you and challenge you all along the way.”
