Andrew Santa Lucia : No Place Like House

Andrew Santa Lucia is an architect and writer based in Chicago. He is the founder of AND/OR US, focusing on architectural research, activism and design speculation; as well as ASquared Buildings and Objects, focusing on professional design-build services. 

In 2014-2015, Andrew co-taught an SAIC funded design-build studio with artist Theaster Gates to renovate a derelict sub-station into a monastery and garden in Grand Crossing. 

Andrew’s upcoming installation, No Place like House, inside of Mies’s McCormick House and his exhibit, Lessons from the Fick Home, at the Elmhurst Art Museum, are both partially funded by the 2015/2016 Graham Foundation Grant to Organizations and will coincide with the 2015 Chicago Architecture Biennial.

ASquared is currently completing ACRE Project’s new gallery and residency space in Chicago.

Andrew is the co-editor of Feedback (EVOLO, 2016) a compendium of essays by designers that focus on architecture’s relationship with noise. Andrew also contributed a chapter to Architecture of Alterity (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2015) entitled Folkcodes and the Urban Legendary. His writing can be found in broad media including ACSA, Ampersand, Artlurker, Bad at Sports, Dichotomy, EVOLO, Fresh Meat, Keep it Dirty, NCBDS and Luxury Home Quarterly.

Currently, Andrew’s research is focused on vernacular peculiarities of American lifestyles—home altars, domestic venues for publicity and compulsive hoarding—and their reflection within American buildings—Superthickness, Interior-infill and Clutter.
