Amy Pleasant and Phillip Chen Named 2018 Guggenheim Fellows

Two SAIC alumni, Amy Pleasant (BFA 1994) and Phillip Chen (MFA 1979), were named 2018 Guggenheim Fellows by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Appointed on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise, the successful candidates were chosen from a group of almost 3,000 applicants in the Foundation’s 94th competition.

Pleasant’s work includes painting, drawing, and ceramic sculpture, all exploring the body and language through repetition. This repetitive drawing process creates a visual language over time, like an alphabet. In Chen's ongoing series of prints, he activates the dismantling of categories and the multiplicity of vision, utilizing a range of visual languages by which to explicate and redress cultural-historical events while infusing personal and global perspectives.
