Alum’s “Exacting Craftsmanship” Featured in Art in America

On February 19 Art in America reviewed Floating Drawings by alumnus Alexis Petroff (MFA 1987), presented this fall at Chicago’s Adds Donna gallery. “Petroff's sometimes showy, sometimes spare mixed-medium sculptures can be playful wall-size constructions with a theatrical flair or smaller pieces with a delicate, even fragile, simplicity,” says writer Kyle MacMillan. Investigating properties of line and space, his abstract wall works “offered a wrinkle on artists' longstanding efforts to blur the distinction between painting and sculpture,” MacMillan adds. “Petroff uses an exacting craftsmanship and geometric sensibility to unleash his work's whimsical spirit and compositional freedom.”
