Alumnus’s Brainchild Gallery Wars Recruits New Art Audience

On November 7 the Spartan Daily of San Jose State University (SJSU) highlighted Gallery Wars—a new project initiated by SAIC alumnus Scotty Gorham (BFA 2007).  Hoping to draw attention to SJSU’s art community, Gorham designed the project to appeal to the university’s diverse demographic. Gallery Wars contestants are given five hours to produce a work of art in line with a designated theme using only the materials provided. Audience members then cast votes to determine the winner. “The art world is filled with competition,” Gorham explains, “and Gallery Wars embraces that competition and puts it out there in a straightforward, yet playful, way that hopes to ultimately strengthen our community." Gorham’s Gallery Wars have focused on sculpture, but he plans to extend the event to include artists of all media. “My goal with Gallery Wars is to show that sculpture is cool—that art is cool—and to remind myself and other artists to enjoy what we do because it rules.”
