Alumnus Mark Newport Featured on Mr X Stitch Embroidery Blog
September 28, 2012—Mr X Stitch—a blog dedicated to contemporary embroidery and needlecraft—recently featured an interview with SAIC alumnus Mark Newport (MFA 1991). Newport often merges embroidery and two-dimensional media, juxtaposing material and image to expose their deeper historical and societal implications. “I use embroidery as a reference to traditional gender roles where many people think of embroidery and other textile work as something women do,” he explains. “So when I use it on a comic book image of a superhero it makes for a contradiction and raises questions about why we believe certain things are masculine or feminine.” Newport’s interview, published September 23, is part of eMbroidery, a series of interviews illuminating male contributions to embroidery and textile media.
