Alumnus Brings Unconventional Oil Skins to Hong Kong

On May 17 the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) announced Material Discovery, the first large-scale exhibition of paintings by SAIC alumnus Angel Ortero (BFA 2007, MFA 2009) in Asia, at SCAD Hong Kong’s Moot Gallery. The exhibition, curated by SCAD chief curator Isolde Brielmaier, PhD, debuted this February at the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah and features Otero’s signature “oil skins.” To create these skins, Otero pours paint onto glass and then peels it off in dry sheets. He then grafts the paint onto canvas along with materials like resin, spray paint and silicone. "This body of work reveals my intention not only to address the possibilities and impossibilities of painting, but also to create a dialogue about the issues that have historically surrounded the practice," Otero says. Material Discovery runs through August 23.
