A Sociological Survey of The Art World

On November 19 SAIC alumnus Pablo Helguera (BFA 1993) announced the release of “Art Scenes: The Social Scripts of the Art World,” published by Jorge Pinto Books New York. “Based on many years of observations,” Helguera states, “the book aims to contribute to the neglected area of the sociology of contemporary art, proposing the inauguration of a field described as ‘Art World Studies.’” Creative Time—a nonprofit arts organization based in New York City—praised the book on November 20, calling Helguera “one of the most engaging and provocative voices in world of contemporary art.” Helguera also works as an artist and is Director of Adult and Academic Programs at the MoMA.
