2013 Honorary Doctorate Recipient Depicts Empires in Collapse
On March 28 New York Times critic Roberta Smith reviewed Empire Descending a Staircase, a new body of work by SAIC’s 2013 honorary doctorate recipient Joe Zucker (BFA 1964, MFA 1966). The artist’s series of seven grey watercolor paintings on drywall “honors the centennial of the 1913 Armory show (whose more notorious work was ‘Nude Descending a Staircase’) and the present state of American Exceptionalism,” explains Smith. “Asymmetrical, checkered geometries” represent columns and capitals in a state of “schematic collapse.” “Initially unassuming, these works gain strength as you look at them,” Smith says, “their beauty and their pessimism running neck and neck.” Empire descending a Staircase runs through April 27 at Mary Boone Gallery in New York City. Zucker will receive his honorary degree in May at the commencement ceremony for the class of 2013.
