Alumna Highlights Major CTA Project by Local Chicago Artist

On August 30 Art Slant contributor and SAIC alumna Thea Liberty Nichols (MA 2007) profiled local Chicago artist Theaster Gates.  Nichols outlines the artist’s multidisciplinary practice, focusing on the $1.3 million dollar contract he received from the Chicago Transit Authority for an artwork made in conjunction with the renovation of the Red Line’s 95th street station. Gates’s proposal includes an integrated architectural feature attached to the station’s exterior façade and a stand-alone work positioned inside a walkway. “Gates makes room for objects, individuals, and even buildings to have their moment; he platforms things, including ideas, ideals and individuals,” Nichols states. “And in a funny twist of life imitating art, his newest space will actually be a platform, the 95th street el platform to be exact.”
