LeRoy Neiman Center: Facility Features
Student Union Galleries
Student Union Galleries (SUGs) has a new, 1,000-square-foot student gallery on the first floor of the LeRoy Neiman Center. This gallery will provide the student artwork at SAIC a constant street-level presence as well as provide a window into the work SAIC students make.
SAIC’s new Video Blocks offer a new opportunity for installation of video artwork exclusively in the Leroy Neiman Center. The Digital Video Blocks are an innovative tool for artists to create modular, high definition, state-of-the-art visual work that breaks all the expectations of video projection. The 25 separate MicroTiles can work together or separately in unlimited configurations and can sit on the floor, hang on the wall, or be built into a structure. Applications for exhibition proposals utilizing this exciting technology will be available at the new SUGs Gallery.
Summertime on the Indiana Dunes Mural
LeRoy Neiman created Summertime on the Indiana Dunes (1965) with his wife, Janet Byrne Neiman, whom he met when they were students at SAIC. Originally commissioned by Jack Murray for the Mercantile National Bank in Hammond, Indiana, this mural—measuring 8 feet high by 65 feet long—is the largest ever created by the artist.
1st Floor Program/Event Space
On the first floor, the LeRoy Neiman Center has the capacity to host events for up to 80 people, with a projector, sound, and lighting to complement everything from a lecture to an informal gathering. Events held in this space will be open to the SAIC community, encouraging those who come across your program or event to drop in and stay awhile.
Student Government/Student Programming Board Office
Members of the Student Government and Student Programming Board will hold office hours throughout the week to meet with students and plan programs that help make the LeRoy Neiman Center an important hub of activity on campus. Whenever you are in the LeRoy Neiman Center, drop by and say hello!
Campus Life Office
The Campus Life team, made up of the Director of Campus Life Chinwuba Okafor, Assistant Directors Roy Rodriguez and Laura Lamb operate the LeRoy Neiman Center. This office will help coordinate events in the LeRoy Neiman Center and around campus, address facilities questions, and work closely with the food service. Please stop by and say hello and tell them how they can improve your experience at the LeRoy Neiman Center.
The second floor has a large area just for student lounging. After all, SAIC students need a place to relax and hang out with their friends, right? This space can also be used for programs and events ranging from coffee houses and open mic nights to film screenings and informal critiques. This area is also equipped with audio and visual equipment as well as sound and light controls.
Our full-service café, operated by our food service vendor, Food for Thought, marks a significant shift in food service at SAIC. The offerings at this new food service will be eclectic, always fresh and handmade, seasonal, but also considerate of students operating on a tight budget. Open for breakfast and late evening meals throughout the week, the café will offer a place for students, faculty, and staff to gather and have a bite to eat together.
Student Leadership Suite
The Student Leadership Suite, which can be configured as one big room or two smaller rooms, will be a new central place for student groups to hold activities and meetings. The Student Leadership Suite is equipped with the latest audiovisual equipment. These rooms will be reserved for student group meeting and events from 12:00–1:00 p.m. and 4:00–6:00 p.m. during the week. At other times, faculty and staff are encouraged to use the Suite. The Student Leadership Suite is made possible by a generous gift from the Robert Parrillo Family.
