  1. The street in front of Jones Hall, Madison Street, will have the south lane blocked off from traffic. Please pull your car into this blocked off lane. SAIC staff will give you a number that you should display in your car window. This number indicates that you are a part of the SAIC move-in and demonstrates in what order you will be assisted in unloading your car.
  2. Wait to unload: You may need to wait to unload your item due to a high volume of traffic; however, most vehicles will not have to wait to unload.
  3. Check-In: As the driver of the vehicle waits to unload, the student should proceed to the check-in table, located in front of the building (or just inside the lobby if it is raining). If the student is the driver, the student may leave the car to check-in. You should come prepared with emergency contact information, as you will be asked to provide this at check-in.
  4. Unload your vehicle: SAIC student volunteers and staff will assist you in unloading your vehicle and getting your items to your room.
  5. Find a permanent parking space: Once your car has been unloaded, it must be immediately moved to one of the city's parking garages. SAIC has a partnership with the Theatre District parking garage located on Dearborn Street and Lake Street which offers a discounted parking rate ($16.00 instead of $36.00) on move-in day only. SAIC staff will be able to give you a blue discounted parking ticket.

* If you arrive after the move-in times, Madison Street will not have a lane blocked from traffic. Please find a parking spot and see the Campus Security Officer in the lobby of the building to assist you in obtaining the key to your room and laundry carts to assist with moving your items.

  1. Obtain a number: The numbers will be distributed directly in front of the 162 North State Street building, on the corner of State Street and Randolph Street. Approach the building by heading south on State Street. You will see SAIC staff and signs directly in front of our building (just north of Randolph Street) A SAIC staff member will give you a number to display in your window and give you directions on how to join the line of vehicles waiting to unload. This number indicates that you are a part of the SAIC move-in and demonstrates your place in the line of vehicles waiting to unload.
  2. Wait to unload: After receiving a number, follow the directions given to you by the SAIC staff member to join the line of vehicles waiting to unload. The line will circle the entire block surrounding the building. (State Street, Lake Street, Dearborn Street, and Randolph Street) The driver must remain in the car during this time.
  3. Check-In: As the driver of the vehicle waits to unload, the student should proceed to the check-in table, located in front of the building (or just inside the lobby if it is raining). If the student is the driver, notify the SAIC staff member who helps you join the line of vehicles. S/he will assist you with checking in. You should come prepared with emergency contact information as you will be asked to provide this at this time.
  4. Unload your vehicle: As you move through the line, you will end at the unloading zone which is in the alley (Couch Place) located at the north end of our building. SAIC student volunteers and staff will assist you in getting into the alley, unloading your vehicle, moving your items to your room and getting out of the alley.
  5. Find a permanent parking space: Once your car has been unloaded, it must be immediately moved to one of the city's parking garages. How long will it take me to move in?

The length of time it takes to move into the residence halls can range from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the amount of vehicles unloading, elevator usage, etc. Staff members and SAIC volunteers will be present to help minimize the length of time it takes students to move in by facilitating a waiting line to unload, helping to unload the vehicles, running the elevators (in 162) and more. Please know that there are often long waits for the elevators as there are many people moving in and only two or three elevators, dependent on the building.

Where are the public restrooms in the buildings?

In 162 North State Street Residences, there are public bathrooms on the 4th and 16th floors. In Jones Hall, there is a public bathroom on the 3rd floor. In the Buckingham, there is a public bathroom on the first floor.

What resources are available to help me move my items into the building?

Laundry Carts: We will have laundry carts available for all students to use throughout the move in weekend. These are a great way to get large amounts of items into the building quickly! These are available throughout the entire move-in weekend and throughout the academic year.

Where are the grocery and home stores?

There are many home and grocery stores very close to the residence halls.

How do I move the items that I purchase from the grocery and home stores into the building?

If you have filled your vehicle with groceries and items, you should re-enter the waiting to unload line. When you reach the unloading zone, you may unload your vehicle there. If you are carrying your items into the building, you can enter the front doors to wait for the elevators. Please note: your wait for the elevator may be longer as expected as we need to continue to move students in as they arrive at the school.

What if I need to move in after the official move in times?

Students are welcome to move in after the official move in times; however, we don't have as many resources available to you.

Check In: The check in desk will no longer be outside of the building. Students will need to check in with the Campus Security officer in the lobby who will direct them to a Residence Life staff member who will access their key and information.

Parking: We have the parking permits for unloading zones for limited amounts of time after the official move in ends. (Jones Hall—Madison Street until 6:00 p.m.; 162 North State Street Residences—Couch Place until 6:00 p.m.)

Laundry Carts: We will still have laundry carts available for use but students will need to pick them up from the Residence Life desk. (the Buckingham, the lobby; Jones Hall, 3rd floor; 162 North State Street Residences, 4th floor)

What if I am bringing an oversized vehicle? (U-Haul truck, moving van)

In Jones Hall and the Buckingham, there should be no issue with you unloading your large vehicle. In 162 North State Street, oversized vehicles can be a little more challenging to fit into the alley. Please expect that SAIC staff will offer you special directions about how and where to unload.

What if I am arriving via cab or airport shuttle?

In Jones Hall and the Buckingham, you may follow the move in directions as stated. In 162 North State Street Residences, you may pull in front of the building. You will not be required to get in the unloading line. Please note: carts may not be available immediately. You may need to unload your items and then secure a laundry cart.

What if I am moving in from a hotel?

Some students choose to follow the above listed steps as they have a full car load of items. Some students are more successful by walking their items over to the building. Either option is acceptable. Please note, we do not have enough laundry carts for students to take them back to their hotels.

What about my roommate?

Your roommate's name and contact information will be emailed to your school account and mailed to your permanent address around August 1, 2014. If for some reason, you do not receive notification by the end of the second week, contact us directly at the Residence Life Office at 312.629.6870 or student_life@saic.edu. It is a good idea to contact your roommate before move-in to get to know each other, arrange items to bring, or even make travel plans together.

Can I send packages to the residence hall before I arrive?

Yes, you may. You have a couple options to do this:

New Service to SAIC Students: Ship-To-School!

College Boxes

Ship-To-School is a program offered by Collegeboxes, Inc. to help students get their items from home to school. We have worked with this company for over 8 years and they serve many schools across the nation. Ship-To-School service allows you to schedule FedEx to pick up your items at your home, ship the items for temporary storage near school, and then deliver everything to SAIC before domestic student move in so they are waiting in your room!

The process is simple: go to collegeboxes.com to register for Ship-To-School; they schedule a FedEx pick up your items from your home and ship everything to their local storage facility; then they deliver them to your room as the school year begins. Don't worry that you don't know your room assignment yet—SAIC will work with Collegeboxes to ensure they have the right room number. Students will need to contract with Collegeboxes on an individual basis—head to Collegeboxes.com for more information.

If you plan on sending some belongings to the residence hall before you arrive, please attempt to have the belongings arrive as close to your move in date as possible. Our mail storage room will not allow us to store packages for weeks at a time. If you do mail us a package, we will accept it, log it, and put it into our secure mail room. We will also place a package notice slip in your mailbox. Students may pick up the package at the residence hall front desk (4th floor in 162 N State Street Residences or 3rd floor in Jones Hall) by presenting this package slip to the desk. Please see information about the mailing address below.

Please note: The residence halls will receive 100+ packages a day during the week prior to and the two weeks after move in. We will do our best to process these packages and disperse them to residents in a timely manner. We ask for your patience during this time. Please consider this information as you order supplies that have time sensitive deliveries.
