The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) Disability and Learning Resource Center (DLRC) is staffed with a team of specialists who provide services, accommodations, and support to students with disabilities; serve as a resource for faculty and staff; and provide educational programming for the SAIC community on disability topics with a focus on the arts.
In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the DLRC works to provide equal access to all SAIC programs, services, and facilities for students with disabilities.
Individual accommodations and learning support include:
- Priority registration
- Extended time on exams
- Distraction-free testing area
- Note-taking assistance
- Use of a tape recorder
- Assistive listening devices
- Furniture modifications
- Housing modifications
- Interpreters
- Reduced course load
- Preferential seating and accessible parking
Accommodations
Accommodations are determined by the DLRC in consultation with the student and possibly the instructor. Accommodation refers to a change in the status quo. A reasonable accommodation in the educational setting is an appropriate academic adjustment that is applied to a course or program that allows the person with a disability to participate as fully as possible.
While the DLRC believes that every effort should be made to reasonably accommodate students with disabilities, an accommodation is not reasonable if it results in a fundamental alteration to the course or program.
Learning Support
Learning specialists are available through the DLRC to offer one-on-one support services for students who would like assistance strategy sessions management, organization, writing process, and note taking.
