SAIC Scholarships and Grants

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) awards a variety of merit and need-based scholarships and grants to students to help attract a talented group from diverse economic backgrounds to the school. In the 2022–23 academic year, we awarded more than $53 million in assistance from our own funds. Explore this section of the website to learn about the wide range of SAIC scholarships and grants available to help you finance your education at SAIC.

Note: The combination of all gift aid (traditionally grants, scholarships and any other aid that does not have to be repaid) may not exceed tuition each semester. All scholarships and grants at SAIC that are applied to a student's account are for tuition only with the exception of the Federal Pell Grant.

Merit Scholarships

SAIC awards merit scholarships to students who demonstrate exceptional levels of thoughtfulness, skill, conceptual capabilities, and academic groundedness. Scholarships are financial awards that do not need to be repaid. No additional application is required; merit scholarships are awarded at the time of admission based on a holistic view of your portfolio and application materials.

Please contact the Office of Admissions at 800.232.7242 or by email at admiss@saic.edu for more information about merit-based scholarships and the scholarship review process for new students.

Advice for Developing a Merit Scholarship Portfolio

  • Show us what makes you different, present your work in a clear and cohesive manner, and go beyond technique.
  • Build a portfolio of thematic work—multiple pieces that share similar ideas, techniques, or media.
  • Mesh great ideas—political, environmental, and even social within your work.
  • Think about your portfolio as a gallery show you are curating.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship

Admitted Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) applicants will qualify to receive a $2,000 scholarship per academic year through the admission process once PTK status is verified. This is in addition to any other merit scholarships awarded through SAIC Admissions. A separate application is not necessary for this award.

The Tuition Exchange Scholarship

If your parent or legal guardian works at a college within the Tuition Exchange consortium and you plan to attend SAIC as an undergraduate student, you may be eligible to apply for a Tuition Exchange Scholarship. SAIC only offers Tuition Exchange to undergraduate students. Contact the liaison officer at your parent's place of employment to determine your eligibility and to submit an application to SAIC through the consortium.

You must submit a complete application including your portfolio through the regular SAIC admissions process by February 1 in the academic year prior to your intended entrance date, while simultaneously requesting a Tuition Exchange Scholarship at SAIC through your parent's place of employment. Scholarship selections are announced by March 1 of each year and are based upon artistic merit and academic achievement.

SAIC receives 30 to 50 requests for Tuition Exchange scholarships each year and is able to award 5 or 6.

The annual scholarship amount is determined by the consortium on a yearly basis. For the 2023–24 academic year, the set amount is $41,000. Students who are awarded these scholarships are responsible for tuition and costs beyond the amount of the Tuition Exchange Scholarship and any other types of aid.

Note: The combination of all scholarships or grants may not exceed tuition charges.

Domestic or permanent non-resident students are required to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to apply for federal, state and SAIC aid, including merit scholarships at fafsa.gov. This may assist in financing the additional costs not covered by the Tuition Exchange Scholarship. The SAIC priority deadlines for completing the FAFSA each year is Dec 1st for undergraduate Illinois residents and January 1 for all other students. Additionally, separate institutional financial aid applications must be submitted for classes taken in the winter and summer terms.

The scholarship is renewable, annually, for up to four years (eight semesters), upon completion of two-thirds of all credits attempted cumulatively, and a submission of recertification by your liaison officer to SAIC each year. For a list of member institutions and further details, consult tuitionexchange.org.

Merit Scholarship Renewal Requirements

At the end of each semester, academic completion requirements are reviewed for each merit recipient. As a Merit Scholarship Recipient, you must successfully complete either 75 or 100 percent of credit hours each semester depending on your scholarship. See your merit award letter for details.

Grades of W (withdrawal) do not count against the 75 or 100 percent completion requirement, however, you may only receive your scholarship towards credits at SAIC that are required for your degree requirements.

Awards are Prorated Based on Actual Enrollment

Recipients of merit scholarships are notified by an award letter that lists the annual award and total award according to their program minus any transfer and/or AP credits.

Undergraduate students are initially awarded according to a typical 30 credit hour year for the fall and spring semester at 15 credit hours each. Awards are prorated up or down if the student is enrolled in more or less than 15 credits per semester.

Graduate students are initially awarded according to the standard enrollment specific to their program and are prorated up or done if the student is enrolled in less or more than their standard enrollment per semester.

Summer and Winter Terms

Students may request to use their merit award for the summer or winter term by completing a summer or winter institutional financial aid application

Withdrawal or Leave of Absence After Beginning Enrollment at SAIC

After beginning enrollment at SAIC, a withdrawal and/or leave of absence does not affect a student’s eligibility for merit scholarships (unless you leave for a certain duration of time in which you must re-apply for admissions and forfeit past merit scholarships per SAIC Policy).
Otherwise, only failing or incomplete grades may have an adverse effect on these awards. Grades of W (withdrawal) do not count against renewal requirements.

Deferring Your Admission

If you are awarded a scholarship, and you defer admission to a later term, you forfeit the scholarship and will need to resubmit an updated portfolio, statement of intent, and recent transcripts to be considered for future merit-based scholarships.

Note: Additional Aid

Eligible students may submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) beginning October 1 before each academic year to be considered for need-based grants, federal work-study, and both need and non-need based types of loans.

  • SAIC's school code for the FAFSA is 001753
  • The SAIC Priority Deadline is January 1 for new undergraduate students and February 1 for all other students
  • To file a FAFSA electronically, please go to studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa.

Need-based Scholarships and Grants

All students accepted by SAIC who have completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the deadline are considered for need-based scholarships. No separate application is required.

Below you will find listed just a few of the many need-based scholarships at SAIC created by alumni, parents, and friends who wanted to give the gift of education to SAIC students. These scholarships are awarded in varying amounts based on the results of the student’s FAFSA. Gift aid (grants, scholarships and any other aid that does not have to be repaid) may not exceed tuition each semester.

SAIC Need-Based Grants

SAIC provides need-based grant assistance to students who demonstrate financial need on their FAFSA application. Award amounts vary depending upon enrollment, availability of funds, and SAIC awarding policies.

The Roger Brown and George Veronda Scholarship

Roger Brown earned both his bachelor of fine arts and master of fine arts from SAIC and was a distinguished painter and major benefactor to the school. He donated his art collection as well as his homes and studios in Chicago and New Buffalo, Michigan, to SAIC in addition to establishing this scholarship.

The John and Mary E. Hoggins Scholarship

The John and Mary Hoggins Scholarship was established in 1987 by a bequest left to SAIC. This fund supports need-based scholarships for female SAIC students. Students are automatically considered based on the results of their Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA). There is no separate application.

The Estate of Merrill L. Golightly Scholarship

Merrill Lyon Golightly was an instructor at SAIC and created the need-based Merrill Lyon Golightly Scholarship Fund.

The LeRoy Neiman Scholarship

Established in 2005 by alumnus LeRoy Neiman (class of 1950) for students in financial need. Neiman is one of the world's best-known and most successful contemporary artists. He taught at SAIC and Ox-Bow from 1950–60.

Ike and Florence Sewell Scholarship

Ike Sewell was a restaurateur who founded Pizzeria Uno, Due, and Su Casa.

James and Dorothy Teague Scholarship

James and Dorothy Teague studied design at SAIC in the 1930s. Dorothy established the James and Dorothy Teague Scholarship in 2001 to benefit economically disadvantaged students.

Donor-Supported Scholarships

A significant portion of financial assistance available to students at SAIC is available because individuals and organizations believe in the value of an SAIC education and have created scholarships for students. Gift aid (grants, scholarships and any other aid that does not have to be repaid) may not exceed tuition each semester.

These scholarships ensure that talented students can attend SAIC regardless of their economic background. A scholarship is an investment in the personal, creative, intellectual, and professional development of each recipient.

The educational opportunities made possible by these scholarships encourage each recipient to give back to their community and participate in an ongoing network of support for artists, designers, writers, and thinkers at SAIC.
