High School Programs: Campus Life
Housing is available for all students at Jones Hall, one of SAIC’s residence halls conveniently located a few blocks from the academic facilities. Housing is not required but strongly recommended. Past students have commented on the easy access to classrooms and studios as well as the importance of being with other students.
Jones Hall is a recently renovated facility that has been designated a National Historic Landmark building. All rooms are double occupancy with private bath and kitchenette containing a refrigerator, cook top, and microwave oven. Students provide their own linens, towels, pillows, blankets, and alarm clocks. The 15th floor is equipped with a full kitchen, studio space, and entertainment room. Jones Hall also includes laundry and vending machines.
The residence hall has a 24-hour staffed security desk in the in the lobby, and a full-time hall director who lives on premises. Residents entering the building must show their school-issued photo ID to security staff. In addition, a Summer Residence Educator (SRE) resides on each floor with the Summer Institute students. Curfew is strictly enforced: 10:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Students must be in the building and signed in each night for curfew. Students violating curfew are subject to disciplinary action that may lead to dismissal from the program.
In addition to all of the hard work, there are a variety of opportunities for fun and exploring the city. Students unfamiliar with Chicago can sign up for staff-led tours and organized activities – including trips to local art museums, thrift store shopping, and swimming in beautiful Lake Michigan. Students are allowed to explore the city on their own, but only after attending an orientation covering safety rules and use of Chicago’s public transportation system (CTA). Students are encouraged to travel in groups at all times
The LeRoy Neiman Center
The new LeRoy Neiman Center is the first campus center in SAIC’s history. Made possible by a generous gift from alumni LeRoy Neiman and his wife Janet Neiman, the LeRoy Neiman Center houses the new second floor lounge and café, and is the central hub for SAIC faculty, staff, and students to meet, attend events, view student work, and be inspired.
All Summer Institute students receive an ARTICard, SAIC’s official ID card, which is to be carried at all times and must be shown to access all campus buildings. The ARTICard gives students free admission to the Art Institute and discounts at the Art Institute Museum Shop and nearby art supply stores. The ARTICard also functions as a debit card and can be used to purchase art supplies and pay for food in SAIC cafeterias and vending machines. Detailed information about how to deposit cash onto the ARTICard will be provided upon acceptance into the program.
SAIC Meal Plan and Dining Services
The SAIC meal plan, required for all residence hall students, provides approximately 10 meals per week. The meal plan will automatically be added to each resident student’s ARTICard. This convenient declining-balance program gives students the ability to choose a full meal or grab a quick bite between classes and meetings.
Dining facilities are located across campus in the LeRoy Neiman Center, the MacLean Center, and Columbus Drive building. Food options include vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices.
SREs in Jones Hall will also take groups of students to different restaurants in the area. Students may cook in the residence hall, but must remember to bring their own cookware. SREs will also assist students in shopping for food and snacks at local grocery stores.
