Announcing: "Jump-Start January" CAPX Graduate Student Programs 

Jump-Start January

Our new series of programs designed specifically for graduate students, Jump-Start January, officially begins next week. Featuring events, lectures, and workshops ranging fromCliftonStrengths® sessions to one-on-one financial planning meetings with Portland-based podcaster Lillian Karabaic, graduate students will have a variety of opportunities to "jump-start" their year with a little help from CAPX.

Monday, January 14: Know Your CliftonStrengths®

Discover your dominant talents and the ways in which you naturally think, feel, and behave as a unique individual. Learn what motivates you, where you are most in your element, and which career paths might be best for you by using this insightful assessment!

Tuesday, January 15: Tools for Teaching
10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m., Sharp 327

Associate Dean of Graduate Studies Dwayne Moser will give an overview of the nuts and bolts of the application and interviewing process as well as the philosophical components of teaching. You'll also learn how to survive your first round of interviews. Additionally, Christina Gomez, Director of Academic Affairs for Diversity & Inclusion, will lead a discussion on crafting a diversity statement. You'll learn what is important to consider when drafting this now essential element for your application packet. Finally, CAPX's own Nancy Gildart will facilitate a workshop for developing a teaching philosophy that fits; you'll learn what is important to you in your teaching practice and how to express it.

Wednesday, January 16: Paths to Publishing

Learn how to share your ideas with the public by getting into the habit of writing, blogging, and giving conference presentations. Sessions will be led by novelist Eileen Favorite and Duncan MacKenzie of the Bad At Sports podcast.

Thursday, January 17: Write On!
10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m., Lakeview 1427

Proposal Writing 101 and beyond with the Museum of Contemporary Art's Gibran Villalobos. This workshop will touch on various logistics surrounding grants, fellowships, residencies, and other applications. Emphasis will be placed on coherence of writing in relation to support images/work samples, curating work appropriate for application demands, clarity and feasibility of vision, budgetary organization, and project time line estimations.

Friday, January 18: Get Real: Creative Canvas
10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m., Lakeview 1427

Learn how to use Creative Canvas, an idea exploration and planning tool for creative projects, with Chicago Artists Coalition's Penny Duff and multimedia artist and cultural organizer Erica Mott.

Tuesday, January 22: Oh, My Dollar!
10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m., Sharp 2nd Fl, SW Corner

Being fiscally responsible with Portland-based podcaster Lillian Karabaic. Take the fear out of managing your money, loans, and livelihood and learn how to face your fiscal responsibilities head-on. Lillian will cover strategies for taking control of your finances, including making a personal budget and developing savings and contingency plans.

1 Day, 6 Hours, 4 Winners, $5K: How can you use your creative skills and $5,000 to make life better in a Chicago neighborhood?

Join us on SaturdayDecember 8, for our inaugural SAIC Good Energy Project "Hackathon" event to brainstorm ideas with other SAIC students and industry mentors for our new social entrepreneurship initiative. 

Taking place in the Sharp BuildingRoom 327from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the all-day event will culminate in grant winners announced on-site. No advance prep is required, and our Good Energy mentors will be there to help you generate project ideas on the spot.

2018 SAIC Internship + Career Expo

The 2018 SAIC Internship + Career Expo is almost here! Our biggest event of the year returns Thursday, November 29, from 3:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m. in the MacLean Ballroom, bringing together over 65 employers, organizations, and studios from throughout the Chicagoland area to meet with SAIC students and alumni.

Mondays: RésuMondays – Stop by on Mondays for an opportunity to review your résumé with a CAPX advisor.

Tuesdays: Know Your CliftonStrengths® – CliftonStrengths® are a great way to learn how to emphasize your dominant talents, and this workshop teaches you how to channel your strengths into everything from managing group projects to forming your job search strategies.

Wednesdays: Group Jobs Search – Curious how to start your jobs search? Come to our Wednesday group workshops that offer you a number of ways to refine your search strategies and develop your professional materials.

Thursdays: CAPX Internship Info Sessions – Want to know more about how internships work at SAIC? Come to our workshop designed to demystify the CAPX Internship process and learn more about your options. NOTE: This workshop is now offered on Tuesdays, too!
