Study Abroad/Off-Campus: Contemporary Art in Los Angeles

This seminar will explore the contemporary art world through an investigation of the Los Angeles art scene, including viewing work in institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Getty Museum, Museum of Jurassic Technology, and the UCLA Hammer Museum. The class will also visit commercial galleries, private foundations, artist-run nonprofit spaces, artists' studios, as well as Los Angeles landmarks including the Watts Towers. The class will draw upon the resources of Los Angeles's community of curators, critics, dealers, and artists. The class will be taught by Terry R. Myers, Professor and Chair of Painting and Drawing, and an independent curator and critic still based part-time in Los Angeles. Myers has been an active participant in the Los Angeles art scene since 1994, writing for numerous publications and organizing exhibitions for numerous galleries and museums in Los Angeles including the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Hammer Museum, and Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills. The class will meet for five days in Los Angeles and reconvene in Chicago to assess the work seen in Los Angeles, through discussion and written assignments.

Undergraduate—$1,381 per credit hour
Graduate—$1,467 per credit hour
Housing: Students are not required to stay in group accommodation in Los Angeles for this class and may find their own accommodation provided they can meet the group at the scheduled departure point each morning. The class officially starts early on January 6 and ends at 8:00 p.m. on January 10, so housing should be secured for six nights starting on January 5.
Group Accommodation Option: Students may opt to stay at the Highland Gardens Hotel at 7047 Franklin Avenue, Hollywood, California, 90028, where the bus departs daily. Single and twin rooms for six nights cost approximately $900 ($450 each for two). For three people, the room costs approximately $1,020 ($340 each).
