This course in London, England offers an examination of the podium and its usefulness within the context of visual arts culture. Students will regularly attend podium events (including lectures and symposia) at London-area museums, art galleries, and alternative spaces, in an effort to examine various logics of the "podium moment." These include a close look at the performative strategies that are deployed; the way that artists share about the ideas, process, and conceptual force in their work; and its significance as a museological tool. We will also engage a series of readings, exercises, discussions, and critiques in our effort to comprehend this phenomenon. The class will meet with several artists and museum professionals in order to gauge their assessment of the podium phenomenon. Students will produce a final project (essay and/or studio-based) depending upon credit hours.
