This seminar will explore the contemporary art world through an investigation of the Los Angeles art scene, including viewing work in institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Getty Museum, the Museum of Jurassic Technology, and the UCLA Hammer Museum. The class will also visit commercial galleries, private foundations, artist-run nonprofit spaces, artists' studios, as well as several Los Angeles landmarks including the Watts Towers. The class will draw upon the resources of Los Angeles's community of curators, critics, dealers, and artists. The class will be taught by Terry R. Myers, Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing, and an independent curator and critic still based part-time in Los Angeles. Myers has been an active participant in the Los Angeles art scene since 1994, writing for numerous publications and organizing exhibitions for numerous galleries and museums in Los Angeles including the Museum of Contemporary Art and Gagosian Gallery, Beverly Hills. The class will meet for five days in Los Angeles and reconvene in Chicago to assess the work seen in Los Angeles, through discussion and written assignments.
