Itinerary: Jaipur, Varanasi, Delhi, Agra
This trip, for studio and/or art history credit, will explore, record, and engage the layered geographies of Jaipur/Amber, Varanasi/Sarnath, and Delhi/Agra. We will study the cultural multiplicity of their origins and the material culture that grew up in and around these cities. We will engage in hands-on workshops, walking tours, scholarly lectures, and meet people from varied fields who will speak deeply about the material culture from personally engaged points of view—contemporary art, music, architecture, textiles (stitched, printed, woven, mended), book and paper making, miniature painting, filmmaking, curatorial practices, pilgrimage studies, and more. The idea of a portable studio will be the way that each participant engages the trip on a daily basis in journaling, documentation, research, drawing, or collage. Mapping the experience of our travel and articulating a point of view through personal recording in a chosen medium will come together in a gallery exhibition/ presentation in Varanasi.
