Study Abroad/Off-Campus: Fire and Ice: A Glassblowing Intensive
Dates:
January 6–20, 2013 *Note: Dates subject to change
Location: Water Street Glassworks, Benton Harbor, MI
Take the chill off winter in this fire-y, hands-on, two-week intensive in the art of glassblowing at Water Street Glassworks, located just around the tip of the lake, in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Learn the skills, techniques and tools used to manipulate molten or “hot” glass into vessels and/or sculptural forms. Lectures, demonstrations, instructional videos and critiques will augment studio instruction. By working in teams of two, participants will learn the importance of teamwork and how it creates a safe and efficient glass studio environment. Students will also work together as a class to create a public performance/installation involving hot glass and ice. This presentation will kick off an exhibition of individual artwork at the end of the second week. Time outside of class can be spent seeing the dunes, icebergs and fields of Michigan’s winter landscape, going ice-skating or enjoying activities in the Benton Harbor Arts District.
This course is designed for the beginning student, however it can be adapted to accommodate intermediate level students with previous glassblowing experience.
The medium of glassblowing requires lots of physical activity. A glass studio is a shared environment that is very busy and often hot. Teamwork is necessary and full participation in: studio time, developmental sketches, the final exhibition, the demonstration / performance are required to complete the credit hours.
The school has a small library with books on glass as well as the wireless internet. Video, digital media will enhance lectures and will also be available for personal research.
