Study Abroad/Off-Campus: Designing London: Fashion, Objects, Culture, and the meaning of "Britishness"
London and Edinburgh
Tentative Dates: June 19–July 5, 2014 (depart the United States on June 18)
London. No other city or people so continually mine their cultural and visual heritage. Both respectful and irreverent, British designers are ever redefining and at the same time reconfirming the idea of Britishness. This trip will investigate London and Edinburgh through the ideas of research, collecting, and reinterpretation in design and culture. Students will visit venerated and obscure collections of objects, ideas, and garments, exploring historical and contemporary design exhibitions and studios. We will visit renowned sites of design study including the Victoria & Albert Museum, Royal College of Art, and Central St. Martins. We will browse repositories of British collecting like the Soane Museum and the Wellcome Collection. We will explore open-air markets, neighborhood galleries, and avant-garde boutiques and study the origins of modern British design through the works of William Morris and the public design of the London Underground. A weekend's journey to Edinburgh will uncover the proud, defiant history and current fringe cultures of Scotland. We may even find the Lost Rivers of London.
You will respond to your adventures through writing, mapping, and documenting the trip while in London—informing the development of a collection of garments or objects on return (for studio credit) or analytical research on aspects of British design history and culture (for Art History credit).
