Study Abroad/Off-Campus: Painting and Studio Practice in Umbria, Italy
Dates:
June 17–July 6, 2013 (depart USA Jun 16) *Note: Dates & itinerary subject to change
Itinerary: 3-week studio residency at the International School of Painting, Drawing & Sculpture in Umbria
For centuries, artists have been inspired by the rare light and color of the Umbrian countryside as well as its regional culture, rich in great art and complex history. From the Early Renaissance to the 21st century, this unique environment served as backdrop and catalyst for artistic investigation and experimentation. We invite you to come find out why!
In this study trip, students live and work in a traditional (non-touristy) Umbrian hill-town village with majestic views and rustic textures that has attracted artists from all over the world for centuries. Students are provided with large private studios with 24-hour access in a converted 16th century convent, where they are free and encouraged to pursue the work of their choosing. Additionally, students will make 2 side trips visiting museums in major Italian cities (to be advised), such as Florence, Rome, or Sienna.
Students will work with resident faculty and will also meet with an international roster of select visiting artists, art historians, and lecturers. There will be individual and group critiques.
This is a fabulous opportunity to experience a new culture while focusing on personal work through representational languages. A supporting community of artists contributes to an intensive and challenging program that will expand your work in exciting and unexpected ways.
Accommodation and travel dates: The program fee includes all meals, accommodations in shared rooms, and studio spaces at the International School. A bus will pick up students on the program’s start date at Rome's Fiumicino airport and will take them back on the end date. To use the airport pick-up students must book a flight that is scheduled to arrive in Rome in the morning, and a departing flight time in the afternoon.
