Itinerary:
The study trip starts in Toronto and ends in Montreal.

As the only French-speaking cosmopolitan metropolis in North America, Montréal has a rich history and a distinctive position in the world, often perceived as a bridge between Europe and America. As a result, the city possesses a wealth of innovative cultural institutions servicing its population, in both French and English.

The trip is designed to introduce students to this unique creative landscape via a series of site visits and intimate discussions with guest presenters. The focus of the trip will be on Montréal's rich history of experimentation in the expanded field of time-based art. Students will be introduced to a variety of institutions ranging from centers dedicated to the production, distribution and preservation of films and videos to cutting-edge venues dedicated to research and exhibition in the field of new media, video games, performance and installation arts. We will visit museums, galleries, cinematheques, performance spaces, research centers, and artist studios.

The trip is scheduled to coincide with three internationally renowned events: Festival Trans-Amériques, focusing on performance art, avant-garde theater and contemporary dance; MUTEK, a festival of electronic music and digital arts; and Fringe Montréal, a celebration of creativity without limits that includes music, comedy, dance, and theater. We will also spend a day visiting sites and art institutions in Quebec City, the province capital celebrated for its old world charms.
