Scandinavian countries have a long tradition of integrating art and design into everyday life. This study trip will focus on the various ways art and design practices in Scandinavia are able to play a role in society directly—through public art, socially-oriented design projects, and other artistic and social entrepreneurial strategies. The trip will be centered around Turku (Åbo in Swedish), Finland. Turku is a medium sized city, the gateway to the 10,000+ island archipelago on the baltic, and the former capital of Finland. It is a regional center for sound art, media and biotechnology technologies, research universities, and of course art and design. From Turku, students will travel to Stockholm via cruise ship, a wonderful way to experience the 23 hours-a-day midnight sun one finds in June, and also to Helsinki to explore design, public art and media art history in the region. The trip will include visits to the Arabia and Iittala design centers, buildings and residences of Saarinen and Aalto, and more. Students will live in residences on the campus of the Åbo Akademi (in the city center) for three weeks, will spend time working with local art and design students, and will meet some of the artists and designers responsible for the wide variety of public art and civic design projects undertaken in Turku. Students will work in teams to complete art/design proposals that will have the potential for further development once they return.
