Digital Crafting Basics Fall 2017 Student Projects

Digital Crafting Basics Fall 2017 Student Projects taught by Laura Prieto-Velasco
January 2 - January 23, Flaxman Library Main Collections Exhibition Cases, Sharp Building 6th floor

Digital Crafting Basics is an elective course within the departments of Designed Objects and Sculpture, but open to all disciplines and majors. During the course of the semester students explore various processes of sketching, ideating and prototyping using 3D modeling software, rapid prototyping, CNC plasma cutting in tandem with traditional studio techniques such as lost wax metal casting, forming, and fabricating metal to explore ideas within the class project prompts.

LOST Project
Lost wax casting is a process where one material makes space for another. In this case, wax is burned out to form a cavity and metal (bronze or aluminum) is used to fill this space. This process has been used for centuries in various forms, yet the basic principles still remain elemental to art, design, and industry. Through the process of casting students each interpreted our own point of view of the meanings of “LOST” within their personal work and respective disciplines.

BODY FUTURES Project
As we move through time our bodies naturally change, as well as our perceptions of our corporeal selves and their physical as well as virtual “place(s)” in the world. We can think of our bodies as sites of growth and extension, sources of creation, as well as subject to conversations of ownership, loss, and trauma. Students were invited to re-interpret the project prompt in the form of a wearable object or object directly relating to the body created using 3D generated patterns for CNC plasma cutting sheet metal.
