Master of Fine Arts: Sculp Sem:Discourses of Sculp Sculpture--perhaps more than any other discipline--offers the widest and most complex view of artmaking. Many of the most essential discourses of what we think of as contemporary art today are rooted in an expanded concept of sculpture. This now includes multiple ways of working: temporary and ephemeral; mixed media and inter- or trans-disciplinary; functional, decorative, symbolic, and critical; and site-specific and community-based. This course is aimed at first semester graduate students in Sculpture but of relevance for all graduates students in any department. Subjects are probed in conversation with visiting artists and other professionals, discussion around readings, and critiques of students? work. | Tuesday 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Master of Fine Arts: FVNM Sem:Shapeshifters Within an interdisciplinary framework, students will rearticulate an initial concept through multiple iterations, rethinking, reimagining and adapting their initial idea as they move from one discipline to another. With each reconfiguration, the student will need to consider the history and specificity of each medium in order to question, challenge and blur these boundaries. Each student will set their own path, creating three versions of their project, moving between screen, space and page. We will look critically at the practice of many contemporary artists such as Marina Abramovic, Ant Farm, Matthew Barney, Paul Chan, Andrea Geyer, Sharon Hayes, Albert and David Maysles, Shirin Neshat and Ryan Trecartin. Lectures and discussions will focus on the writing of Hal Foster, Stuart Hall, Jorg Heiser, Rosalind Krauss, Chris Salter, Hito Steyerl as well as artists writing and interviews. | Tuesday 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Master of Fine Arts: Sem:Our Apparatus:Perf/Med/Prc Our Apparatus: Performance, Media and Perception This seminar examines the current field of so called 'audiovisual' performances and installations, following in the tradition of formal and perceptual experiments of the early 20th century and in particular of experimental film, video and sound of the second half of the 20th century. We will address the prominence of ephemeral aesthetic production and experience, instilled by the use of a generally unstable and rapidly shifting electronic media landscape but also driven by an event--?hungry culture lusting for 'amp'd' techno monumentality versus the needs for stability and longevity in art installations, and finally the want of sellable artifacts of the art market. | Wednesday 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Master of Fine Arts: Viscom Sem:Form-Conf-Context This critique seminar explores conceptual and structural configurations of personal and public cultural space. Constructing discourses about social, cultural and political phenomena, students derive content and voice to produce process artifacts that may range from a communications tool (a singular, interactive element) to a communications scenario (a system of urban or media elements). Two projects are given, each using a distinct methodology. Beginning with a focus on personal cultural space, students investigate the influence of mediated messages on the construction of identity using a generative matrix, pairing symbol systems with functions of communication. The semester continues with a focus on public cultural space, as students examine the dynamics of a chosen community using the process of dialogical mapping, developing diagrams that clarify rhetorical and metaphoric relationships within a community. Each methodology introduced in this seminar is inferred from linguistic analysis, intended to reveal and cultivate the complexities within each student's work. | Friday 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Master of Fine Arts: Viscom Sem:Narrative Arch This critique seminar explores the structure of storytelling. Students review traditional dramatic form, incorporate methods of collaging content and explore experimental narrative structures and physical configurations. The course begins and ends with targeted design+writing projects utilizing non-linear narrative methods such as circular or never-ending, list formats, and multiple perspectives. Here, students focus on new forms as a means of driving narrative. In between, a longer investigation with a more expanded process focuses on analogy and its relationship to narrative. Using analogy, students deploy various research strategies and novel mapping techniques, fashioning stories out of the strange or incongruous, prodding connections that push against cliche. Each project in this seminar reconsiders basic tenets of reading?flow, dramatic pacing, the capacity to be entertaining. | Monday 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
