Throughout his career, Glenn Ligon has explored American history, literature, and society in work that builds critically on the legacies of modern painting and conceptual art. His first midcareer retrospective was at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2011. One of Ligon’s black-and-white text paintings, Untitled (I Am a Man), hangs in the Obamas' private quarters of the White House.
