Editor’s Note: Out-and-About After Class Issue

Dear grads,

We are so close!

Looks like we can expect to see the first snow of the season in Chicago in no time. Before we know it, the city will be dressed in red and green, chiming in the Christmas spirit. In just another few weeks, critique week and finals will be all behind us.

In this “Out-and-About After Class” issue, Grad Journal gathered information on resources that are available to you outside of classrooms. We have a map of alumni-run gallery spaces in Chicago, interview with SAIC’s Director of Student Affairs, Rayshayla Marie Brown, information on graduate student-groups on campus and a fellow international student’s personal essay about his experience at the Writing Center—all ready for you to enjoy.

As always, please feel free to get in touch with Grad Journal if you have any ideas you’d like to share with the graduate community. You can email me at

Special thanks goes to our contributors, Salim Moore, a first-year MFA student from the Painting & Drawing department, Manishar Ar and Nan Zhong, first-year and second-year MA student from the New Arts Journalism department respectively.

Safe travels to everyone who’s heading out of town for Thanksgiving!
